Setting Up PayPal POS on Your Personal Device
This step is not necessary if you're using a HATDS device.
Download the PayPal POS app from your app store, then follow these steps.
1. Tap the Staff Login button and sign in with these credentials:
- Email: dm1@hatds.org
- Password: hatdsdm1
2. Set the payment types by tapping the Menu , then Settings.
- Turn OFF
Cash,Invoices,Gift Card,PayPal,VenmoandManual card entry. - Turn ON
Tap to Pay. - There is another type, called
Card, that is on by default.
3. Internet Connection, Location Services, NFC
- An internet connection is required.
- You may connect to the Dauntless WiFi network: ID VaultOfShadows Pass Phrase: 7133859507
- PayPal POS requires that location services be turned on.
- If your device has NFC (explained below), you'll want to use it. Be sure it is enabled.
Connecting the card reader
NFC can be faster than the card reader, but it's best to have the card reader ready in case NFC isn't an option. If the card reader hasn't already been paired with the device you're using, do this:
- Hold down the power button on the reader until it enters pairing mode.
- In the PayPal POS app, open the Menu.
- Choose Settings > Hardware > Connect card reader
The white card reader that we use at contra is number 712.
The dark gray reader that we use at English is number 179.
The card reader will show “Hello” when ready. If it goes to sleep during the dance, it will wake up when a payment is required or you can press the power button to wake it up.
The PayPal POS card reader can process chip cards and all forms of contactless payments, but not card swipes.
Making a Sale

PayPal POS uses a shopping cart metaphor. We normally have three products
that can be added to the cart.
To add a product to the cart, tap the appropriate button.
Tap a button again to add more of the same product, such as a second member admission.
Each time you tap a button, that product will be added to the cart and its price will be added to the total charge at the bottom.
The image shows one product in the cart (upper right) and a $10 amount waiting to be charged.
Completing the Transaction

Press the Charge $XX.XX button. You will be taken to the Payment methods screen where there are four choices.
1. Card Button

Tap the Card button if you're using the card reader. Then follow the instructions on the reader.
The card reader can be used for most payment types. It must be used when
- the customer is not using a contactless method of payment and needs to insert their chip card, or
- the device you're using does not have NFC enabled (below).
If the card reader goes to sleep and doesn't wake up when you touch Card
, press the power button to wake it up.
2. Tap to Pay Button

Use Tap to Pay rather than the card reader if you can.
Tap to Pay requires that NFC be enabled on your device and that the customer is using a contactless card or their phone with Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.
To use Tap to Pay:
- Tap the Tap to Pay button.
- Touch the customer's card or rear of their phone against the center rear of your device. That's where the NFC sensor is.
If the process fails, you can always use the card reader.
3-4. PayPal / Venmo
We currently do not accept Venmo or PayPal due to problems they introduce into our accounting procedures. This may change in the future.
Cancelling a Sale
You can remove an individual product by going to the cart and swiping the product off the screen.
To cancel a sale completely, empty the cart by tapping the trash can in the upper right.
Recording Income via PayPal POS
If you are filling out a report for a dance, it's important to record only our net income after fees are subtracted.
In the PayPal POS app:
- Touch the Menu in the upper left ().
- Tap Reports.
- Tap the date of the dance.
- Scroll to Payments and fees.
- Record the Total via PayPal POS (payments minus fees).
